Quality Rug
The right horse rug?
I'm looking to buy a rug for my 17yr old TB mare for the winter (even though it's summer at the moment in australia, but i want to be prepared) and I'm looking for something waterproof, but I'm not sure on whether I should get just a summer rug or a light winter rug because our winter is fairly mild in the wide bay, queensland. I was told that a summer rug should do her to give her a bit more warmth in the colder months, as she isnt a very good doer, I cant leave her without a rug as she'd lose weight trying to keep warm and has only recently started gaining weight from being in a poor condition when we first bought her. What's the best type of rug to buy that is fairly inexpensive, but of good quality? What rug would you recommend?

Once you get her weight on she will have the fat reserves to keep warm without burning the extra calories. Unless your winters are damp I would leave her without a blanket. It tends to be much better for them in the long run.
Our winters here are much more severe than Australian winters and even our arab does fine without a rug.
The problem with a rug is that if you use one their natural coat will not grow as long and thick and they will not have the insulation there. Then if they lose or tear their blanket they will be unprotected until you get a new one for them!
