If you're used to taking antihistamine, you know full well, that each time you have a sting, the condition worsens.

If, on the other hand, you treat the bee sting with a homeopathic remedy such as Ledum or Apis, you will not only resolve the problem more easily and quickly, but each time you are bitten, the reaction will lessen, until it becomes what is considered normal.

So when you are weighing up the cost of natural health versus western medicine, take into consideration the long term view.

As a natural medicine practitioner, I know I don't get the right remedy 100% of the time. That used to bother me. I used to be concerned that I was wasting my patient's hard earned cash if I didn't deliver.

Now I realise that it's not just me at fault. Apart from the fact I'm human and so do make mistakes, if the patient isn't forthcoming, I can't do much.

But what I really admire about natural medicine is that when I do make a mistake, it doesn't have any real impact on you, the patient. I didn't take the wrong kidney out, or give you too large a dose of a dangerous drug which pushed you close to or over the edge.

I was reading an interesting article with bright shiny pictures recently that I found really impressive. The art in the pictures was big and bold with interesting textures and an off the wall modern feel. Some of the sculptural pieces had an interactive feel to them with jets of water that sprayed up or trickled down like rain or waterfalls. All in all, it was a lovely installation of art ... except it wasn't, it was a bathroom.

Some of the products that have emerged in the last few years in the area of bathroom design are utterly gorgeous. The big, solid, freestanding carved marble washstands look like pieces of abstract sculpture with water elements. The minimalist showers with glass tile mosaics and rain shower look more like elegant water fountains than places to wash in the morning. They're big and bold and innovative.

For those that have the money to spend on such unique works of functional art, there is a lot of interesting pieces out there to choose from. Pretty much any item that you'd find in a bathroom you can find in a sculptural version. There are carved stone varieties, sculptural porcelain, ceramic, glass, bronze. Due to the fine quality of many of these items as well as the vast quantity of some of them, many of these items are quite pricey however.

For those of us who're used to a far simpler form of washroom though, I can see that some culture shock could be inevitable if one found themselves in such a facility.

The downside that I can see to some of these fixtures and designs is what I like to call "The Seashell Experience". Consider the movie Demolition Man; for anyone who doesn't remember that particularly stunning piece of film history, the main character is woken up after spending 40 years in suspended animation and quickly discovers that the future that he has awakened into has evolved new bathroom fixtures that he doesn't understand how to use. The only clue being a set of three seashell-shaped fixtures where the toilet paper should be. At least he comes out and admits that he doesn't understand the process; how many of the rest of us would just spend the afternoon fiddling with the controls, too embarrassed to come out?

After reading through some of the sculptural design articles, I worry a little about finding myself in one of these gorgeously decorated bathrooms and not knowing how to turn on the water or flush the toilet but I suppose that as long as no one mistakes a stylish and dramatic piece of art for the commode it's all good.

China's completion of an historic natural gas pipeline with Kazakhstan bypassing Russia this week tightens the Asian behemoth's grip on energy resources needed to fuel a burgeoning economy, a desire also forcing it on a quest for oil and gas wealth in other corners of the globe.

China is not alone in this scramble for energy security. Hungry for oil and gas, world powers like Russia and the United States are also relying on different strategies to grab resource treasures but their efforts have raised questions about conflicts down the road.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration describes China as the second largest energy consumer behind the United States. Taking advantage of the world's financial crisis, the Asian powerhouse has tapped currency reserves to invest in both Russia and Central Asia, helping to construct power plants and other domestic infrastructure in return for long-term oil and gas supplies, said Ben Montalbano, a senior research analyst at the Washington-based Energy Policy Research Foundation.

Lacking energy reserves, China has been "working hard to lock in" investments in Africa, Central Asia and Venezuela, Montalbano told OilPrice.com. The country has also sought natural gas to satisfy increasing consumption and built many liquefied natural gas receiving terminals over the last year, he added.

"Cut off from African natural resources . . . China's growth stops," warned Peter Pham, director of the Africa Project at the New York-based National Committee on American Foreign Policy and an associate professor at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

This intensive bid for energy, however, has caused friction with the world community. Under an investment strategy in Africa, China "wins over very easily governing elites but doesn't necessarily win over the populace," Pham charged.

Chinese state-owned companies tend not to invest in exploration but prefer to offer "inducements," he said. China's offer of multibillion-dollar credit facilities to Angola was pivotal for the African nation to get "off the hook" from negotiating with the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to meet "serious reform and certain conditions" before the organizations granted such facilities, he argued. China then bought stakes from the Angolan state oil company, he said.

China, moreover, has helped the Khartoum government to evade United Nations sanctions by assisting in the building of at least three weapons factories in Sudan, he said.

Not to be outdone, Russia has returned to Africa in "considerable force" pursuing natural resources in part to recover its "great power status," said Pham. Russian firms are trying to "lock in partnerships" with resource producers to form, for example, the "stream of a natural gas OPEC," he said.

Russia holds the world's largest natural gas reserves and the eighth largest oil reserves, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Next year, its federal budget will be nearly 50 percent derived from oil and gas exports, emphasizing a reliance on gas exports to "feed the budget," Montalbano of the Energy Policy Research Foundation told OilPrice.com. To some extent, China and Russia have worked together in the oil and gas domain. Earlier this year, China announced a $25-billion loan to Russian firms in return for a 20-year supply of crude oil.

Russia is not the "behemoth of financial reserves" it was two years ago and has a "fairly weak" banking system and industry, Montalbano maintained. While the country is discussing certain projects with Iran and potentially with Iraq, it is mainly concerned with opening up huge Arctic gas fields because its existing fields are declining, he noted.

Russia and other northern countries have increasingly turned to the melting Arctic but the region is "still up for delineation," said Boyko Nitzov, director of the Eurasia Energy Center at the Atlantic Council in Washington. "The Arctic is still fairly off limits for large-scale production of oil and gas" and difficult to access especially during the winter, Nitzov explained.

For American oil companies, an over-reliance on the Middle East for energy needs has shifted its attention to Africa, a major energy supplier over the last several years edging out the Persian Gulf in energy imports to the United States, Pham explained. U.S. firms tend to forge production-sharing agreements or explore resource development, but lack Carte Blanche in their pursuit of oil riches in places like Africa due to U.S. government sanctions and public pressure, he said. This puts the United States at "a slight disadvantage" relative to Russia and China, he added.

Competition for energy assets will probably not lead to open conflict but rather to increasing political tension, predicted Africa expert Pham. Leading African organizations, Europe and the United States never recognized Guinea's military coup last year, which led to a subsequent massacre of opposition members. Yet China signed a deal with the military junta, risking a perception as a "rogue operator in the single-minded pursuit of resources," he warned.

Although Russia and China, meanwhile, have both benefited from joint oil and gas investments, making conflict doubtful in the foreseeable future, "10, 20 years down the road, who knows," Montalbano added.

MLS would have a tough time using the table format. Americans are too accustomed to the playoff format so a table format would be tough to market. The closest to the table format is college football but they still play a championship game and every season there's controversy on who plays in that game!

Second, there's no relegation in MLS. I won't get into that detail, but relegation would be very difficult to implement in the U.S. due to how physically large this country is (MLS tries to be geographically balanced), how much investment is put into new soccer stadiums, and the franchise entry fees...

Without relegation, a team at the bottom of the table wouldn't be motivated to play hard because the season is lost already. With a playoff system, the team can believe they can go on a winning streak and just make the playoffs.

MLS has modified the playoff system this season to favor teams who do well in the regular season, but it's not close to a table format. Without relegation, I don't see the format changing.

I believe the playoff system saved the Mexican Primera League. They were having financial problems until they implemented the Apertura and Clasura "half seasons" with a playoff system at the end of each half season.

I live in... Acton. Mainly because when we were looking for a place to buy it was the area we could afford. It also has really nice leafy areas and Victorian style flats. We fell in love with the high ceilings. I grew up in Fulham but it's a bit too expensive!

We own the whole house.... as we bought the flat above. It's a lovely Victorian style house. When you walk around you feel grand! You could say it's an affordable manor house.

The best room in my house is... the dining room because I love having dinner parties and entertaining. That's also where a lot of discussions and decisions about everyday life take place. Dining tables have a lot of history and hold a lot of information.

My style is... more European than Salvadorian, but it's my take on what I think European is. I see the European style from a completely different point of view.

My interior taste is... sophisticated chic, with a touch of nostalgia. I like modern style but I also like the idea of buying old things. We buy quite a lot of antique-looking furniture and I'm into old-fashioned, heritage style but I like to give pieces a new life - a contemporary edge.

My most sentimental possession is... a Victorian armchair which belonged to my partner's grandmother. It was going to be thrown away but we rescued and reupholstered it. It's sentimental because it's something we saved and we foresee looking good with a contemporary take.

My heritage... is important in that I come from a culture where we make use of our available resources. But I've been living in the UK for 18 years now, so have adopted a lot of the lifestyle here.

The oldest trick for updating a room is... to paint one wall of a room in a colour that will make a statement of you; whether that's calm and natural or very bold. Another thing I like is buying vintage fabric and putting pieces inside picture frames, and having a few scattered on a wall, combined with mirrors and pictures.

It feels like home when... there is warmth. That could be achieved with the colours that you choose on your walls or the way you arrange your pictures. I don't like clutter and chaos but I like to feel that the house is lived in.

The interior trend I foresee at the moment is... what I would call 'chic patchwork' - patchwork with an eco conscience but with a more considered edge. That's where the chic comes in - the selection of fabric is more considered. People like the idea of recycling but if it doesn't look nice they won't buy into it.

What really inspired me was... seeing my grandmother run a patisserie - seeing objects come alive in a batch scale, and sharing that with people.

I am proud of... having accomplished an MA at the Royal College of Art, and being the only Salvadorian that have achieved that so far. As well as running my own company for the past eight years.

My favourite design is... Pure Magic. The technology of that product has been around for a long time but most people have used it to make very tacky things. I saw the opportunity to use it on a different scale for a different use. It's being sold in The Conran Shop which is an achievement.

My inspiration comes from... very random thoughts and cuckoo ideas. The candelabra, Pure Magic, were inspired by the idea of a person blowing out candles and melting the candle wax, and the way that would shape it. It was an analogy or a story and that created a product.

I would love to own... everything in Skandium. I love everything in that shop.

I admire... a table called Ventaglio, designed by a lady called Charlotte Perriand. It's not rectangular but has lots of beautifully polished slabs of oak going in different directions; some sides are thin, the others wider so it breaks the archetype of a traditional table. It challenges what a table should be.

If my house was burning I would grab... bread, butter and some ham. The rest ... well, what can you do? At least you can have a sandwich while your house is burning down!

I looked over your color scheme, and I assume this is a medium to small room. Based on all that, I suggest you paint the walls white.
I know it sounds stark with the cabinets and all but your choice of carpet is so high contrast that you must do this to preserve the balance of the room and keep it light. This will give it an art gallery feel, then get a clean red sofa, and a chrome and white leather workchair. See design within reach website for examples. Keep it simple cause youre going to work in this room. Light it with chrome fixtures all over the place, look for cable or ovoid track lights for the ceiling.
